10KM na Ceathrún Gaeltachta

The annual Gaeltacht Quarter 10km run took on Sunday 08/10/17 and attracted 150 in only its second year. The run, which kick started Féile na Carraige, saw runners depart from An Chultúrlann at 9.00am before travelling past the Gaeltacht area of the Shaws Rd and making its way back down through Andersontown and to the Cultúrlann. This years winner, Philip Goss, recorded a time of 34:09. All participants were greeted with refreshments and fruit when they arrived back at An Chultúrlann. They were also presented with the ‘10km na Ceathrún Gaeltachta’ medal and T-Shirt.

We are absolutely delighted at the number of people participating in the run this year, despite the run being a relatively new event on the calendar. It represents an energetic and vibrant beginning to our exciting Féile na Carraige Programme which will bring the best of music, discussion and craic to young and old over the next week. All proceeds from this event will be donated to TACA, which supports emerging Irish medium nursery and primary schools. This run provides a very positive and social representation of the Irish speaking community across Belfast and we hope to see those that were running today at other events we have lined up through the week.

Doireann Nic Dhomhnaill from Monaghan, who took part in the race said:

“It was challenging, particularly at the beginning with the ascent up the Glen Rd but the craic and support along the way really helped. The organisation of the run could not have been better and even though running can be a lonely business, I really felt like I was running as part of a community this time which is testament to the positive vibe created by the organisers. I took part last year also and the growth in one year is phenomenal. I can’t wait to see what kind of numbers will be here in 2018. One things for sure, it is now a permanent fixture in the Belfast running calendar.”
