Free Community Breakfast

Free Community Breakfast 2017

Throughout the year, Glór na Móna organise Free Community Breakfasts inspired by the Black Panther Party in solidarity with the local community. This project, called Bricfeasta Saor ‘s Gaelach, began in 2017 and is organised during annual festivals Seachtain na Gaeilge, Bluebell Festival (in partnership with Newhill Youth and Community Centre), Féile na Carraige and Fleadh Feirste.

Prices of food, heat, electricity and other basic needs of living are constantly rising and it is leaving many families in working-class areas in desperation. All the while, major international companies like BP and Shell – who are responsible for rising prices – are publishing record profits that they have been making recently.  This is no coincidence.

The last few months have been described as a ‘Cost Of Living Crisis’, but we know what it really is, as Indian journalist Vijay Prashad said, “for the working-class capitalism is a permanent depression, capitalism is a permanent crisis”.  While such initiatives as our Bricfeasta Saor ‘s Gaelach does not stop this overnight, it is a small step to show solidarity in our wonderful community.
