COMMUNITY LECTURE SERIES CONTINUES

Glór na Móna’s chairperson Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh hosted the latest community lecture in the 2010 series recently.

Entitled ‘An Ghaeilge faoi Ghlas: Republican Prisoners and the Irish language revival in the North of Ireland’, the talk was a synopsis of Feargal’s 2009 PHD study.

The talk touched on the effects of colonisation on native languages as well as the history of the Irish language right up to the present day.

Feargal works full-time as Project Worker with the west Belfast Irish language development agency Forbairt Feirste. Therefore, he was well able to inform the audience on the progress of Ireland’s only urban Gaeltacht, the Gaeltacht Quarter of west Belfast.

A lively debate followed afterwards in which questions were answered on the future of the language revival, current threats to the language and more.

The next lecture in the series will be given by Deena Haydon, a postgraduate researcher from Queen’s University.

“We’re social, not anti-social – Challenging the criminalisation of children and young people” will take place on October- Fri 16th, 7.30pm at the clubrooms of Górt na Móna CLG.

Fáilte roimh chach.
