Tcítear dúinn arís go bhfuil daoine ógá ag fréamhú agus ag cumhachtú iad féin i ngluaiseacht athbheochan na Gaeilge. Bhain mé an sult as.”

In recent years across Belfast young people have been at the fore of organising Irish language sports clubs, youth groups and social events. This week, we see yet again young Gaels are embedding and empowering themselves in the revival movement of their native tongue. In June 2015, youth workers alongside young people from the Upper Springfield founded Cumann Iascaireachta Loch Lao (Loch Lao fishing club). More than 30 people of all ages and backgrounds joined up to the fishing club and took part in the planning for the year ahead.

On Tuesday past, the Irish language fishing club Cumann Iascaireacht Loch Lao took to the rods and cast for their first fish at Murloc Fishery in Athalee. Emma Ní Bhaoil, fishing club member who caught her first fish said “I’m always up for trying new things and it was a class feeling catching my first fish, it was just amazing to get to do this with friends and have the chance to speak Irish in this way and especially during the summer when school is closed. Bhain mé an sult as.’

The primary focus of Cumann Iascaireachta Loch Lao is to boost the use of the Irish languageeamo-300x240 through the medium of fishing. It’s part of a wider vision to increase the social use of the Irish language, open up more opportunities for people to learn and socialize through the medium of Irish. We believe this will add to the personal, social, cultural and linguistic development of all people involved. We have members that speak fluent Gaeilge, those who are learning, members with ‘cúpla focal’, and those who speak no Irish but are beginning their journey of discovering the language.
